Memorial Day Ceremony at Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

When it comes to military ceremonies, the Intrepid is tops.  Its always a pleasure to witness the unfurling of the 100' American flag on the Pier at the museum.  Here are some of my images from the day where our Military was truly honored.

Navy League, NY Council Reception for Officers & Commanders - Fleet Week

This wonderful Fleet Week event returned last night after a one year hiatus due to gov't cutbacks.  The Reception for Officers and Commanders, held at the prestigious New York Athletic Club on Columbus Circle, hosted dozens of military personnel for an evening of cocktails, hors d'ouerves and socializing.  It was an honor to be there among our distinguished service men and women.  Here are some of my photos:

The open air terrace offered another space in which to relax and socialize.

The ball room was filled to capacity with members of the military, spouses, friends and supporters.

The captains of each ship in New York harbor for Fleet Week were announced with a bosun's whistle and bell, in a traditional military ceremony.

Memorial Day on Intrepid - May 27, 2013

Memorial Day weather was warm and comfortable for the hundreds of people who attended the annual Memorial Day Ceremony on the Pier.  Fleet Week was canceled this year due to the Government Sequester, therefore there were fewer military there to be honored.  But they were uppermost in all minds as wreaths were tossed overboard, taps played, rifles shot, and prayers said for those who were lost in defense of freedom.  Here are some of the photos .. Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend on Intrepid

I'm continuing to work on editing the 2,200 photos taken on our April trip to Montana and Washington.  In the meantime, I'll just catch up with a few recent photo shoots.

 The huge HumVee got a lot of attention from young men taking their photo with it.  I was told it gets 16 mph on the highway, which is more than I anticipated.

Memorial Day aboard Intrepid

The Memorial Day Ceremony was held this year on the Pier rather than on the Flight Deck, since the Flight Deck is being prepared for the arrival of the Space Shuttle Enterprise.  This year was another hot, sunny one with hundreds of military and families and supporters present.

Italian Naval Admiral assigned to the United Nations with a 95-year old Veteran preparing to toss a wreath into the Hudson River in memory of those fallen.

A new technique for me .. A panorama of the 100' flag unfurled on the Pier, held up by currently enlisted and veteran members of the Armed Forces.

My husband, Eric, (blue cap) took his place at the perimeter as a 20-year veteran of the Air Force.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Intrepid

When it comes to commemorating Memorial Day, nobody does it better than Intrepid.  With her long history and dedication to veterans and active duty alike, she serves as a gathering place on this important day.  This morning, the deck was full of military, active and retired, and supporters both youthful and elderly.

The crowd on the flight deck listened to the inspirational words of Intrepid President Susan Marenoff-Zausner, an invocation by Navy Commander Timothy Oswald, and remarks by Admiral John C. Harvey, Jr., U.S. Navy.

Mets Justin Turner, Mike Pelfrey, and Jason "Izzy" Isringhausen joined their General Manager Sandy Alderson on the flight deck.  Alderson participated in the wreath laying ceremony.

Singer/songwriter Joe Brucato sang his heartfelt song "Thank You Soldier".  Hear it below.

The highlight of the ceremony was unfurling of a 100' flag, held on all four sides by active military and veterans.  Eric and his assistant Kevin took their places on the hem of the flag.

2 Hornets and 2 Super Hornets flew overhead after the flag was unfurled.

A day like this makes one feel so proud to be American, and very grateful to the men and woman who sacrifice so much for our freedom.  Thank you Intrepid for all you do!  Click here for Proof Positive Photography website.
