Like water off a duck's back ..

Actually, like water off a Canadian Goose's back, giving him (or herself) a bath.  Shot taken yesterday during our late-Winter stroll through James McFaul Environmental Center in Wyckoff.
The geese were especially vocal, and on the move, all day.  From early morning, we saw several large flocks overhead in their classic "V" formation.  And from deep in the woods at the environmental center, we could hear their honking.  Spring must be right around the corner.

To freeze the motion of the water and keep the bird in focus, I shot at ISO 2000 at f14.0 for 1/800s in bright sun, with my Nikkor 70-200 mm 2.8 VRII lens.  Click on image to get a closer look.  Use back arrow to return.

Star Wars visits Intrepid for Kids Week

Winter break is the time when the Intrepid rolls out the red carpet for youngsters.  Yesterday was "day 3" of the 9-day Kids Week events held aboard the Intrepid.  I had the honor of photographing Mr. Roscoe Orman, a/k/a Gordon of Sesame Street fame ...

... as well as numerous Star Wars characters ...

... some colorful puppets, and my dear husband, Eric, the Curator of Aviation and Aircraft Maintenance, who read a story to youngsters seated aboard the Concorde.

Bald Eagles along the Hudson River

Last Sunday, we enjoyed an amazing, long-awaited eagle-watching trip with 4 friends.  We followed an Audobon trail map and made 5 stops along the Hudson River, going as far north as Peekskill.

We counted as many as 30 bald eagles, some in flight and some resting in tree tops in the distance.  But the best moment was when a few of them flew directly overhead.  With a six-foot wingspan, these birds are absolutely magnificent!

The bald eagle's head and tail feathers turn white around 4 years of age.  They have enjoyed a great resurgence in the Northeast corridor after their population was decimated by the toxic effects of DDT.

Cupid's Chase 5K benefit walk - The Real Housewives of NJ

This cold Winter morning, about 300 walkers and runners met at Faber Field in Glen Rock, NJ, to participate in a 5K event to benefit Community Options, Inc., a national nonprofit organization that develops housing and employment support for people with developmental disabilities.

Also supporting COI by participating in Cupid's Chase were the stars of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey".  Click here to see my photos of the ladies, as well as an article posted to Glen Rock's Patch.com site!

Squirrel in the Snow

Just before sundown, I noticed a squirrel digging a hole in the deep snow out back.  He went so far down into the snow that only the tip of his tail was showing.  After a good half minute or so, he emerged with a nut!  Here he is, resourceful little guy!

Groundhog Day Ice Storm

Mother Nature has been showing her power this Winter.  I guess she got bored with all the snow she sent with our previous storms, around 55" so far.  Today, just for something different, she sent an ice storm.

Here are two photos, both taken with my Nikon D300s and my 70-200mm 2.8 VRII lens, late this morning.
