New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition 2013 Summit at Rutgers

Saturday, February 23 marked the Bike & Walk Coalition's 2013 Summit, held at The Edward J. Bloustein School of Public Policy on the campus of Rutgers University in East Brunswick, New Jersey.  Over 60 speakers addressed concerns and actions taken to improve the availability and safety of walking and biking trails and areas throughout New Jersey.
Executive Director Cyndi Steiner and Chair Karen Jenkins and their staff did a great job of organizing the event.  Here are some of the images from the day.  (Click on any photo to enlarge).

Kids Week at Intrepid - Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2013
As seen in the post below, Kids Week is a very popular event at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, particularly for school children and their families.  Here are some photos taken on Sunday, "Sports 'n Games" Day.  (Click on any photo to enlarge)
Former NY Liberty player Kym Hampton played some basketball with a young fan.

Part of the Exploreum floor was transformed into a large hockey field.

Kids of all ages enjoyed bouncing the basketballs.

The Jets bounce house had dozens of kids going back in for more.

Kids Week at Intrepid - Monday, Feb. 18, 2013

Every February, when NYC schools (and surrounding areas) have winter break, Kids Week at Intrepid is the place to go.  Days off due to Hurricane Sandy kept NYC schools in session .. but on Monday, the Exploreum was packed.  Here are some images from the day ... "Science Meets Science Fiction".  (Click to enlarge any image).
Eric entertaining kids and parents at the NASA table.

The performer from Gazillion Bubbles is always a favorite.

The Exploreum was "sitting room only" as kids and their families take in the show.

Young boys gathered around the robotic cars.

Star Wars characters kept the kids entertained and posed for photo ops.

Scooby Doo, another favorite character on board for Kids Week.

Cardinal in the Snow

Yesterday, our male Cardinal was playing hide and seek .. Today, he finally came down from the shrubs onto the snow.  I'd been trying for several winters now to get these shots.  He's so gorgeous, but very shy.  Though he usually comes to the feeder just before sunset, he's unpredictable.  Here are my most recent shot, taken with my Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 70-200mm lens.

Winter birds visiting today

We're guessing that wintertime hawks have been in the 'hood for the past several weeks.  Eric spotted one a while back, but the lack of birds at our feeders is an even better sign that they are up in the skies, looking for prey.
This morning, we had quite a gathering of birds .. A flock of Starlings, single pairs of Chickadees, Cardinals and Hairy Woodpeckers, as well as Dark Eyed Juncos, White Throated Sparrows, and a solitary Mockingbird.  Here are a few photos .. (Nikon D7000 with Nikkor 70-200mm VRII lens)

The Starling and the Mockingbird landed on the suet at the same time, gave each other the eyeball in a brief Mexican standoff, then flew away.

Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, rest in peace

Rest in Peace, Mayor Koch.  When I photographed him at the Veterans Day Parade two months ago, he briefly napped during the ceremonies but was alert and waving as he drove in the dignitaries' car up Broadway, seated with Former Mayor David Dinkins and Congressman Charlie Rangel.
He was quite a character, a true New Yorker who loved the City, serving as Mayor from 1978 - 1989.  Click here to read more about his life.
