Intrepid Kids Week - Wednesday, February 19, 2014

Wednesday, I went back to Intrepid to photograph a second day of Kids Week which runs from February 15th through the 23rd.  There are always a wonderful variety of performances, activities, and interesting facts to learn for not just the kids, but parents as well.  The event is held annually when the NYC Public School system has winter break.  Today's theme was "Animal Safari" and here are some of the images from the day.  Click on any photo to enlarge.

Master Falconer Lorrie Schumacher showing the Barn Owl from Talons of Prey.  She and her daughter, Talon Skye, brought several raptors with them.

Chris Evers, Director and Founder of Animal Embassy brought several animals to the Intrepid, two of which are "Costa" and "Rica", tree frogs.

Young man delighted to hold a very fat African bull frog which can sleep for a full year.

Big Mama and the kids of Camp Intrepid.
Kids were attentive as Chris Evers brought out more animals, one at a time, and taught the kids about each one.
The daughter of an Intrepid employee visited her Mom at work and got to feed a tortoise.
Young people getting a lesson on the life which lives in the Hudson River, from a representative of the Hudson River Park Trust.
Lorri and the Barn Owl entertaining a group of adults and children.
Again, the little darling of the raptors had everyone's attention.
Actors from the Wildlife Theater of the Central Park Zoo were colorful and attention-getting.  The kids loved them.
Talon and "Big Mama" walking off the stage toward the audience, to give them a closer look at the European Eagle Owl.

Kids Week was well attended on Wednesday.
The Harris Hawk, named Pichu, about to take off.  He flew around the Hangar Deck and through the arms of people on stage.

Intrepid Kids Week 2014 - Saturday, February 15th

Yesterday I had the pleasure of photographing the events at Kids Week aboard the Intrepid.  The theme for the day was "Science Meets Science Fiction." The featured guest was NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott, whom my husband Eric, Curator of Aviation, had the pleasure of escorting.  Here are some photos from the day:

Intrepid Educator Tom Barry has three boys totally engrossed in his experiment on stage.

NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott, accompanied by an ASL interpreter, entertained the audience with her incredible stories of spending 91 days on the International Space Station, and then walking in space.
Star Wars characters in front of the Avenger.

More Star Wars characters.  They roamed around the crowd, taking photos with families and kids.

"Mad Science" was very popular!

Kids absorbed in watching how a laser beam cut through the opaque shapes.

A mechanical robot piloted by his brother drops a bottle of water into his arms.

Astronaut Stott is greeted by a family in the Space Shuttle Pavilion.
Kids Week has a different program every day through February 23.  Check out the schedule by clicking here.:    I'll be back this Wednesday the 19th to photograph "Safari Adventure" Day.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2013
As seen in the post below, Kids Week is a very popular event at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, particularly for school children and their families.  Here are some photos taken on Sunday, "Sports 'n Games" Day.  (Click on any photo to enlarge)
Former NY Liberty player Kym Hampton played some basketball with a young fan.

Part of the Exploreum floor was transformed into a large hockey field.

Kids of all ages enjoyed bouncing the basketballs.

The Jets bounce house had dozens of kids going back in for more.

Kids Week at Intrepid - Monday, Feb. 18, 2013

Every February, when NYC schools (and surrounding areas) have winter break, Kids Week at Intrepid is the place to go.  Days off due to Hurricane Sandy kept NYC schools in session .. but on Monday, the Exploreum was packed.  Here are some images from the day ... "Science Meets Science Fiction".  (Click to enlarge any image).
Eric entertaining kids and parents at the NASA table.

The performer from Gazillion Bubbles is always a favorite.

The Exploreum was "sitting room only" as kids and their families take in the show.

Museum educator Dorothy answering a boy's question about constellations.

Young boys gathered around the robotic cars.

Star Wars characters kept the kids entertained and posed for photo ops.

Scooby Doo, another favorite character on board for Kids Week.
