Kids Week at Intrepid - Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013

As seen in the post below, Kids Week is a very popular event at the Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, particularly for school children and their families.  Here are some photos taken on Sunday, "Sports 'n Games" Day.  (Click on any photo to enlarge)

Ramapo Rally - BTCNJ - Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey 2012

Every year for the past five years, Eric and I have worked a rest stop for the riders who participate in our Club's annual Ramapo Rally, held each August in the hills of Northern New Jersey.  This year, we chose the Denville Rest Stop which takes care of hungry and thirsty riders doing either 100 or 125 miles.  We had perfect weather and a great team.  Here are some of the photos from the day.  (Click on any photo to enlarge).

Our theme again this year was "Tropical Paradise" .. The riders enjoyed our hula girl and the upbeat Summer music as they took a breather before going back on the road.

The gorgeous weather brought out 1,100 pre-registered riders for the Rally and we estimate another 300 or so showed up that morning to ride. 

 This guy just couldn't resist a little dance to loosen up his legs.

 Felipe, our on-site bike mechanic from Bicycle II Shop on Route 17, helped riders with flats and other mechanical issues.

We spent the day making PB&J sandwiches and making sure that the fruit was freshly cut and the water and Gatorade jugs were full and cold.

15th Annual Ridgewood LAX Day

Saturday morning, I was out photographing Ridgewood's 15tfh Annual LAX Day events .. Judging by the hundreds of student athletes, parents and families who turned out for the event, lacrosse is a very popular sport!  Impressed!  More photos posted to Ridgewood Patch .. Memorial Day Ceremony at Intrepid

When it comes to commemorating Memorial Day, nobody does it better than Intrepid.  With her long history and dedication to veterans and active duty alike, she serves as a gathering place on this important day.  This morning, the deck was full of military, active and retired, and supporters both youthful and elderly.

The crowd on the flight deck listened to the inspirational words of Intrepid President Susan Marenoff-Zausner, an invocation by Navy Commander Timothy Oswald, and remarks by Admiral John C. Harvey, Jr., U.S. Navy.

Mets Justin Turner, Mike Pelfrey, and Jason "Izzy" Isringhausen joined their General Manager Sandy Alderson on the flight deck.  Alderson participated in the wreath laying ceremony.

Singer/songwriter Joe Brucato sang his heartfelt song "Thank You Soldier".  Hear it below.

The highlight of the ceremony was unfurling of a 100' flag, held on all four sides by active military and veterans.  Eric and his assistant Kevin took their places on the hem of the flag.

2 Hornets and 2 Super Hornets flew overhead after the flag was unfurled.

A day like this makes one feel so proud to be American, and very grateful to the men and woman who sacrifice so much for our freedom.  Thank you Intrepid for all you do!  Click here for Proof Positive Photography website.

Glen Rock Softball opening day

Saturday was opening day for all the teeball, softball and baseball teams in Glen Rock.  Over 900 students from kindergarten through 8th grade participated with their coaches and their families in a march from the Borough Hall to Hamilton School field.  Here are a few of the photos, the rest of which are posted here on Patch.com.

Cupid's Chase 5K benefit walk - The Real Housewives of NJ

This cold Winter morning, about 300 walkers and runners met at Faber Field in Glen Rock, NJ, to participate in a 5K event to benefit Community Options, Inc., a national nonprofit organization that develops housing and employment support for people with developmental disabilities.

Also supporting COI by participating in Cupid's Chase were the stars of "The Real Housewives of New Jersey".  Click here to see my photos of the ladies, as well as an article posted to Glen Rock's Patch.com site!

U.S. Open - Kim Clijsters shines

As a tribute to those lost on 9/11/01, U.S. Marines stationed in Brooklyn unfurled the flag and everyone observed a moment of silence.  Chaka Khan sang America the Beautiful.

Immediately after her win, Clijsters climbed over seats and up into the stands where she ran to the arms of her husband ... 

So romantic!!!

Tonight's US Open Tennis match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium was terrific.  With thanks for the tickets from friends Dina and Bob of the USTA, we enjoyed a wonderful match. Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert made a special appearance.  Eric spotted TV actor Denis Leary in the audience.  It took exactly one hour for 2nd seed Kim Clijsters to triumph over 7th seed Vera Zvonareva, 6-2, 6-1 in the Women's Final.

Kim is a resident of Wall Township, NJ, one-time home of the F9F Cougar aircraft which Eric and Dina are currently restoring aboard Intrepid.  Kim has won 21 consecutive matches at the U.S Open.  Tonight was her 3rd U.S. Open Championship which earned her a $2.2 million paycheck. On the way home to New Jersey, the George Washington Bridge was lit up and we saw the twin spotlights lighting the skyline where the Towers once stood at Ground Zero.

Baker & Son Rigging, we had a great day at the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.  Pictured above are jockeys Eddie Castro on his way to riding Roaring Lion to victory in the Teddy Drone Stakes .. and Paco Lopez who rode Unbridled Essence to beat 41-1 odds and won first place ... and $124 for Eric!
