Space Shuttle Enterprise lands at JFK - Photos

After 3 years of lobbying and planning, and two weather delays, the Space Shuttle Enterprise, bound for Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum, finally took off from its former home at the National Air & Space Museum in Washington D.C. and landed at JFK Airport to the cheers of hundreds of supporters and a worldwide TV and radio audience.  (Click any photo to enlarge).
It was a blustery, chilly morning but the blue skies and puffy white clouds were a gorgeous backdrop to the elegant aircraft flying overhead.  As the Shuttle taxied toward the reviewing stands, the 747 pilot poked his head out of the plane and flew a flag which will be donated to Intrepid and made part of the exhibit when it opens to the public in July.
NY Senator Chuck Schumer addressed the crowd, as did "Mr. Spock", Leonard Nimoy, who told the story of the Trekkies who, in 1976,  lobbied President Ford to change the name of the Shuttle from "Constitution" to "Enterprise."  Mr. Nimoy came back to see "his" space ship again, 36 years after it rolled out of the assembly plant in Palmdale, CA.
Dozens of kids dressed in space suits came to see this historic landing, some from Ridgewood NJ Hawes Elementary School, where I photographed its re-opening ceremony for Patch.com in September.
And a rare shot of me on the other side of the lens ..

Tartan Week Tartan Day Parade in NYC, Saturday April 14, 2012

Truth be told, some photography assignments are more meaningful than others .. Shooting the Tartan Day Parade in New York City yesterday was an "eleven".

Scottish surnames through my Mom include the Gordons, Robsons, Sinclairs, Mackays, Nicholsons and Moultries with home towns of Edinburgh, Dumfries, Caithness and Kircudbright, to name a few.  So the pipes and drums have always captured my heart .. but 1600 of them?  And dozens of Westies and a few Scotties as well?  And Highland dancers?  Incredible!

I photographed the New York gathering of the world wide Pipefest which was held aboard the Intrepid on August 7, 2010 .. Click here to see photos.  That assignment led to this one ... It was a thrill being there, seeing all the Scotland flags, hearing the brogues, and admiring the elaborate kilts and tartans of so many different clans.

Here are a few images from the day.  We were blessed with comfortable sunny weather. The parade route went ten blocks, from south to north up 6th Avenue, so you'll notice by the shadows, it was all backlit.  (Click on any image to enlarge)

These little Westies were just TOO cute with their little pink ears and button eyes!
This little one wore its outfit with great pride.

Love the back lighting on the flags.  The cop holding the Scottish flag had a big smile. Click on the photo to see!

Clans passing Radio City Music Hall.

Both sides of 6th Avenue were lined with appreciative crowds.

All of the clans marched with great pride in the step.

My favorites, the Gordons .. My mother was a Gordon.

A kilt-wearing, flame stick juggling, happy guy.
