Memorial Day aboard Intrepid

The Memorial Day Ceremony was held this year on the Pier rather than on the Flight Deck, since the Flight Deck is being prepared for the arrival of the Space Shuttle Enterprise.  This year was another hot, sunny one with hundreds of military and families and supporters present.

A new technique for me .. A panorama of the 100' flag unfurled on the Pier, held up by currently enlisted and veteran members of the Armed Forces.
My husband, Eric, (blue cap) took his place at the perimeter as a 20-year veteran of the Air Force.

Space Shuttle Enterprise de-mated from 747 - Photos

After napping on and off all day, Eric and I headed over to JFK on Saturday night/Sunday morning.  We arrived at 2:00 a.m. and witnessed the process of disconnecting the two aircraft.  Eric did several media hits, for TV and radio, before we headed home at 4:30 a.m.  (Click on any photo to enlarge).

The view from across the tarmac in the pre-dawn darknesss.
Cranes, hoists and guy wires attached to the Shuttle for stability and placement.

After detachment, the 747 slowly backed out from under the Shuttle.

The final contact point was agonizingly slow.
